Infant Fatally Mauled By Rottweiler

WARREN, Mich. -- A 4-month-old has died after being mauled by a rottweiler at
her grandmother's house.

Police found 4-month-old Lylie Cox on Wednesday inside a home in the 3700 block
of Toepfer Road near 8 Mile and Ryan roads.

Three teenage males were taken by police for questioning after wrestling the
baby away from the dog.

They said the infant's 17-year-old mother had stepped away to warm a bottle of
formula.

The rottweiler, which was visiting the home with its 19-year-old owner, somehow
got loose and attacked the baby.

Witnesses said the dog bit the baby in the head.

"This dog appeared out of nowhere. It was a large rottweiler, probably 140
pounds," said Dan Anderson, who is the homeowner's brother-in-law.

The grandma's husband died earlier this year and Anderson said teens have run
the house since then. "This house has been a party house the entire summer since
my brother passed away in late March," said Anderson.

"Its very sad, very tragic. Yes, it is," said one neighbor who did not identify
herself.

Prosecutors will wait for further investigation before considering charges. The
case will be brought to the Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith on Friday.

According to police, the dog had a history of attacking people. The dog bit
someone when his owner tried to break up a fight.

The dog is being quarantined by Warren police and will be euthanized later this
week.

All things considered, the child is probably better off. As harsh as
that sounds, its probably true.

With "a history of attacking people," the police were probably derelict
in protecting the public. The DA was probably remiss for not bringing
charges; at least, after the second attack on a person.

I didn't have to read the bottom line to know the outcome, for the dog.
This sort of story is like a broken record: the same thing over and over
endlessly. A potentially fine dog falls into the hands of an
inappropriate [read idiotic] owner. Mix in a hapless mother with an
innocent infant, and Shaa-Zamm. Another dead dog.
