Hello,

My name is Paul and I have a big, goofy dog named Muttley. We are both well
known on the RPDB NG, and you have probably seen some crossposted replies
to my posts if you have not filtered out the notorious Jerry.

I originally thought Muttley was a GSD/Chow cross, and he may have some
(purplish tongue spots are the only Chow hints). I've also suspected some
Boxer, but there are numerous indications that he may have a good bit of
Pit Bull in his ancestry, and from what I've read, this may very well be a
"good" bit.

There is a lot of hysteria about this breed, and sadly Muttley may be an
example of what has happened when druggies and gangsters try to backyard
breed a dog that is meant to be scary and vicious, guided mostly by urban
legend and mass media frenzies. Muttley was rescued from the streets of a
bad neighborhood in Baltimore. He was the Alpha Male in a pack of four,
including a Rotty who likely had 9 of his pups in her belly when she was
spayed. He was probably let loose because he was too sweet, although he has
displayed some of the typical dog aggression.

It's a long story, but perhaps worth reading. You can see my recent threads
in RPDB, or you can look at www.smart.net/~pstech/MuttleyStory.htm, or just
look at some recent pictures at
www.smart.net/~pstech/Muttley/MuttleyPix.htm. I have been having a
difficult time training Muttley, and I admit to not being a strong
disciplinarian, but from what I have read, PBTs are smart, assertive, and
headstrong (which is Muttley to a T), and also very devoted to their
humans. He's a great dog and I would like to join in your discussions about
this tragically demonized breed.

Paul and Muttley
