The best protection legally that I have found for our family and the
public in regards to our pitbull is:

PROPER TRAINING &
Renter's insurance from State Farm. They are the only ones I have
found that do not care about the breed of your dog, only its history,
ie. has it ever bitten anyone?

$7 / month and it covers our dog if, IF he bites someone on our
property or NOT.
