Post subject: Euthanize? Found pit bull mix youngster
Archived from groups: alt>pets>dogs>pitbull (more info?)

I found a 7 mo old F pit bull mix about a mo. ago. I couldn't find the
owner. Took her to my vet, got her shots and tested (she's healthy). She's
a sweetheart and smart as a whip. I've never known a dog to be this smart.
She has learned a myriad of commands in these few short weeks. But...I
don't want a dog. None of the adopt-out shelters can (or will) take her.
In looking at the websites for all the shelters, I have become very
discouraged. There are so many unwanted dogs of all types that are every
bit as cute and smart as the girl I found (Rosie). When I walk her, people
won't let their dogs get near her. One woman gave me an ugly look as I
walked by.

I was going to try fostering her and see if I could somehow find her a
permanent home. But the situation looks bleak. As one article I read said,
"It's sad, but the truth is, nice families don't go to the shelter looking
for pit bulls." Lots of the animals lost and being euthanized are pit bulls
or bull mixes. I am very discouraged and sad. To add to the issues, I've
discovered that either she is protective of me, or she doesn't like men.
She has growled at every man I've stopped to chat with, or we've passed by
closely. She seems okay with women (I'm a woman). She's a little thing and
won't get a lot bigger (about 13 inches tall and weighs about 27 lbs.). But
people can see that she's a pit bull mix.

I'm almost at the point where I see no other way out than to take her to the
city shelter, where they will hold her in a cage for 3 days and then
euthanize her. If my vet would do it (but he wouldn't, of course), I'd pay
to have her euthanized in my arms, so she wouldn't have to sit in a cage
alone and scared for several days.

I don't want to "give" her away and get into the hands of some young guys
who decide to try to fight her, or abuse her. I read that pit bulls are the
most abused dog in the country.

Does anyone have any experience or thoughts about this situation? I would
appreciate suggestions at all. Maybe there's another option I've missed?

Well, there's no more to the story than meets the eye. It's not uncommon
for animal lovers to pick up neighborhood strays, esp. when they seem to be
someone's pet as in this case. That doesn't mean they want to keep the pet.

I found her in my neighborhood wandering around, young, obviously lost,
going from house to house, dragging her leash behind her. Another lady and
myself caught her. I walked her to my house down the street to find her
owner 'cause the other lady was on her way to a meeting.

I seriously thought I'd find her owner. She was obviously someone's pet.
But apparently the owner doesn't care much for her. I put a lot of signs
up, going 3 miles away in one direction. I ran a newspaper ad. And I
listed her, with her picture, on about 10 lost pet websites. I got
responses, but it was never for the this dog.

There are reasons that I don't want a dog, despite the fact that I am an
animal lover, and a dog lover in particular. But I don't want a dog right
now, and no time soon. Even if I were to get a dog, this type of dog is not
suited to me, or me to it. But that doesn't mean I haven't gotten attached
to her. I have. She's a very sweet dog. I've taught her to sit, stay,
fetch, drop it, come, stop, potty. I hug on her, take her for walks, play
with her, and in return she gives me lots of kisses and tons of amusement,
as well as devotion. But....I was going to prepare her for finding a
permanent home. I just can't deal with a dog with this type of energy, and
my cat is upset and urinating all over the place, and Rosie the pit bull mix
needs the companionship of another dog (plus can't be allowed freedom around
my cat). I'm gone a lot (a LOT). I can't have any type of dog, much less
this type. That would mean keeping her locked up most of her life, when I'm
gone, or leaving her out alone in the yard most of her life. Which would
cause her to have behavior problems, I'm sure. A life alone in a yard is no
life for a dog, IMO, since they are social, pack animals.

But I got discouraged in looking at all the pit bulls and pit bull mixes
that have been abandoned or are already up for adoption. There are lots of
them. It seems that there is little chance that Rosie would get adopted out
by me...I'm not a shelter with all those resources. And none of those
shelters has room to take her. There's just not much of a demand by nice
loving families to adopt pit bulls or pit bull mixes.

Well, I was just hoping that someone had some suggestions that I hadn't
thought of. I guess I could make the rounds again and start calling and
e-mailing all the adoption shelters again, to see if they now have openings
or will take her now.

Oh, and to answer the question of why I would go to the trouble of rescuing
a dog, taking it to my vet, and teaching it commands:

The answer is obvious. I love dogs. The dog needed rescuing. Once I
couldn't find the owner, I had to get Rosie prepared for a new home, which
means....you have to certify she's healthy, she must be spayed, she must be
housetrained, she must know a few basic commands. It's really very simple.
This is how "rescuing" dogs works, but you may not know this, if you have
never been exposed to the world of rescuing dogs. Plus....just to keep
Rosie around...I had to teach her some basic commands to make her foster
stay with me work better, as well as being better for her.

I didn't have to teach her so MANY commands, but the reason that happened is
because she turned out to be so very smart, that she caught onto the basic
ones so fast, that we just naturally progressed to the more complex ones.

She would be great at those dog agility courses. I've put her one little
jumping step outside, and she also knows the command "jump," and loves to
jump and spring up off of it. She's a delightful dog. I wish I could keep
her, but my home is no home for a dog. I'm just gone too much...plus I
don't have the energy to cope with a high energy dog like this one. Sigh.
That's what I get for trying to help a poor lost dog. At least I tried. If
her parents' owners had been more responsible and had their dogs fixed,
little Rosie wouldn't be in the trouble she's in.

You don't mention in what town you live. Perhaps a reader knows of a
resource in your area that you've overlooked. Also, perhaps someone reading
this post may have an interest.

Sincerely,

John
