Hi all
Not sure if anyone is even here anymore. but I have a question.
Duke was having awful gas and the runs most of the time. We switched to Pro
Plan for sensitive stomachs. He did great for about 5 months and now it is
back to all that.
Vet suggests Iams for sensitive stomachs. Anyone??
Thanks

I've heard lots of bad stuff about Iams. I had a bag I'd bought when I
was watching a friend's dog, and offered it to the pit bull rescue I
used to foster for... and they said no thanks :-)
You might want to call http://pointlomapetpantry.home.att.net/index.html
Or see if you have a local equivalent. They only deal in good food...
raw, natural foods and supplements, etc. They're very knowledgeable.
That's where my girlfriend gets all of her dog food, and I switched from
Nutro to cannidae and buy it from them now.
Is there another vet you could get a second opinion from?

Angie,
I think John is right...switch to an all natural food. A friend of mine had
the same issues with her boy and after trying a variety of common expensive
foods, she switched to all natural. He's allergic to grain based foods and
it was causing the same problems. Now she reads everything and he's doing
fine.
Remember, some vets have contracts so to speak with food companies and they
get extra for having folks buy the brand directly from the vet. I've not
had good luck with Iams or any of the major food brands. I always had to
switch food twice a year and add supplements for the winter. Iams was one
of the worst ones for my guys.

Thanks so much for all the info!! I hadnt ever tried IAMs so know little
about it, that is one reason for asking here :) I have complete trust in my
Vet and know he wouldnt intentionally steer me the wrong way. He has taken
great care of Duke, Dot and Pete and to him they come first. I have called
him at night and he has come in to take care of something. I think he was
just wanting to offer ideas hoping it would take care of the issue, it did
when I switched to the Pro Plan well at least it did for about 5 months. We
will check with Tractor Supply and see what all they carry before heading to
the local pet shops. Will let you all know what we find and how it is
going. Thanks again John and Sandra!!!

Hi --
My Staffie does ok with IAMs.
However to be clear, I'm talking about the IAMs that is in the "green
bag"... Chunks or Mini-Chunks for dogs +1 yr.
Sincerely,
John

Many dogs will "do OK" on IAMs, or Old Yeller, or anything else they can
get ahold of. I think dog food is kind of like the octane rating of
gasoline... some cars run fine on 87, others require 91. except, if
your car runs fine on 87, you will see zero benefit to running 91 I
think dogs will do better with better food, just as you or I would. We
can survive on Ramen and PB&J, but it's just better to have a more
varied diet and to eat higher quality stuff than things mass-produced in
China by the lowest bidder :-)
Besides, I love my dog. I don't want her to "do OK". I want her to be
as healthy and happy as she can possibly be, and spending a few more
dollars for good food is one way I try to make that happen.

Hi John,
Any country can produce low quality food and low quality items. They can
also manufacture the worlds best quality items at the same time.
Please don't refer to specific countries, I am sensitive about that.
Mattel made an official apology to that same country, stating that they were
only following the "Mattel" specifications. re: lead paint
Your reference regarding China is dubitable
Regards,
Russ

Hi Angie,
No time no see I had to put Thunder to sleep and have taken time out to
well ya know. This subject really rang my ears i personally have put
myself out by saying this brand is better than the other.
The case being it is is true ..Thunder almost healed his body by my
buying Blue Dog food it has no persevatives and I saw my boy become a
puppy again. The problem was Thunder bit me and when he did I took him
to my Vet and had Thunder put to sleep. Oh God, I thought I was going to
die myself.
I'm sorry that Russ took that statement personally but, so many people
are being fired because we're tired of China. nothing we buy now of days
has an American label on it. A lot of people have become teminally ill
over the contaminated food it is a national known fact.
You can't go wrong with Blue's food I look for Rusty to live 18 years or
longer.
Oh yeah, I have recued a beautiful Siberan Husky his name is Glacier
he's a couple years old. I'm in love Angie,
Cheers my friend. :-) >> Stay informed about: Duke |

Thanks for all the input. I have not been able to get out to purchase a
different food yet. I care very much about my dogs by the way - I love them
and dont want them to just be "ok".....If I wanted that I would own a
Hamster or some other critter. It is not about cost and never will be.
My old girl is 14 and has never had problems with Pro Plan. I posted
because I wanted some ideas of what everyone fed, because Duke has the runs
on and off and the vet and I agree it is time to try a switch and then tests
again etc......... I will be going out tomorrow to see which we will try
and will update you all. Shannon - I am swaying towards the IVD since I
know of the troubles you had with Trouble. Oh and Jarvis - welcome to the
group, nice to see some new faces here !!!!

Bosh....I'm so sorry to hear about Thunder :-( It's just heartbreaking when
something like that happens....and even harder sometimes to take the next
step to the vet's office. I've been there (minus the bite) and done that
with Gator and it was just awful to deal with.
